COMPANIONS’ CAFE

Working as part of a team to set up, serve, clear away, take orders for a sit down meal service for any one who wants one! This takes place 12.30pm-2pm on Saturdays at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish Centre. You would be part of a rota, depending on your availabilty, as frequently as you are able. We need some more volunteers especially for this important project: any help you can give would be gratefully received!

FOODBANK

The Sunday foodbank is the only weekend foodbank that operates in our parish. This important social project is designed for referred individuals, couples, or families who are in serious financial difficulty to access what is often emergency food supplies. You would work as part of a pair, welcoming those accessing this service, registering their details and issuing them with a food pack. Sundays 1.30pm-3pm

REFUGEE ASSIST

Based at the former Social Club at St Saviour, now used by Refugee Assist as their ‘Hub’, our partner agency is engaged in serving the needs of refugees and other displaced persons resident in our local community either temporarily or for several months, invariably pending the decision of the Home Office as to their claim. Sorting of clothes, donations, collecting donations from drop off points: all these would be a huge help!

SOCIAL SUPERMARKET

The Bread and Butter Thing operate a ‘branch’ of the social supermarket from St Saviour Church and Centre. This takes place on a Monday between 12pm-2pm. The social supermarket offers heavily discounted weekly shopping for anyone who wishes to take up this opportunity. Volunteers help unpack and pack groceries as part of a team. A team that could use some extra hands, if you can offer some time. .

Can you Help, as Part of a Team?

At the prompting of some of our volunteer co-ordinators, I would like to give another push to invite parishioners to consider what you can do to serve others: in our parish and in our local community. Our four social projects are the principle ways in which our parish puts our Catholic Faith into action. Each project is different, but in each of the four areas volunteers work as part of a team and give whatever time they can offer. I know we often think about giving as monetary in the Offertory Collection, but our time can also be an offering - to God and to those most in need.
