Our Lady's Centenary 1909-2009

During 2009 we celebrated the Centenary of the Founding
of Our Lady, Star of the Sea Parish

The 21st March 2009 marked 100 years since the Founding of Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish. On this actual Centenary Day of the Founding of the Parish, because this day fell in the Season of Lent, we held an afternoon of prayer and recollection which culminated with the Saturday Evening Vigil Mass for the Fourth Sunday of Lent for which Parishioners prepared the readings and hymns on a theme of thanksgiving and looking forward; young people and musicians from Our Lady’s and St Bernard’s Schools helped us in these event. Afterwards there was a gathering in the Parish Centre, when the cake was cut by Mrs Doris Leach, one of our older Parishioners, who was present when the Foundation Stone for the present Our Lady’s Church was laid in the 1920’s.

During the week of 22nd June we held a ‘Centenary celebration Week’.
For this week former Parish Priests came back to lead Celebrations, culminating with a Mass with Bishop Brian Noble on the Friday Evening. The events were:

  • On the Monday Evening Father John Rafferty lead a Mass on the Theme of ‘The Holy Spirit’

  • On the Tuesday Evening Father Pat Munroe lead a Mass on the theme of ‘Our Lady’

  • On the Wednesday Evening Father Philip McGovern lead a Service of Reconciliation and Healing

  • On the Thursday Evening Father Chris McCurry lead a Mass on the theme of ‘The Eucharist’

  • On the Friday Evening Bishop Brian Noble, with the Local Pastoral Area Clergy, and approximately ten others, past Parish clergy and those connected with the Parish, lead a Mass of Thanksgiving. Parishioners took part in the Liturgy and Music assisted by Pupils and Staff from Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School, St. Bernard’s Catholic Primary School and Ellesmere Port Catholic High School. These were supported by the High School Lay Chaplain. At the beginning Young People helped us to recall the Story that had brought us to this moment. In his Homily Bishop Brian encouraged us whilst giving thanks for the past, to let it be an encouragement to look forward and live the message in the ‘here and now’. At the end the Young People led a ‘Thanksgiving Liturgy’ which encouraged us to ‘Live the Story’ and take it forward in the ‘here and now’. A Centenary Candle was then lit and a light from this passed onto the St. Saviour’s Golden Jubilee Candle to begin their year of Celebration.

All these events were well attended and a Social Gathering took place after each event in the Parish Centre. All of this was due to a great deal of hard work and dedication by Parishioners who gave so much of their time and effort. Much of this work took place in the background, like the Group who Hand made the Wonderful Banners placed round the Church. All this effort by all who took part is deeply appreciated.

The whole week was a real uplift of faith that helped us in looking back and giving thanks, to look forward and continue the journey of faith we have received, and live it today!

The Centenary Celebrations continued with a Parish Celebration Evening Dinner Dance, Hot-Pot Supper and an ‘ABBA’ tribute band held at the Civic Hall in the early autumn.

A Day of Recollection at the Poor Clares Convent in Ellesmere in October 2009 marked the conclusion of Our Lady’s Centenary celebrations and the beginning of St Saviour’s Golden Jubilee.

Centenary Prayer

For all that has been
in our parish
We say 'thanks',
for those who have
gone ahead of us,
for their faith and their care,
and the spirit they
have left with us.
For all that will be
in our parish,
We say 'yes’,
for the possibilities that will
present themselves,
For the potential that will
reveal itself
Lord be with us
